Walkerville Bathroom & Bedrooms Renovation

This 1840s two-story home in Walkerville underwent a creative renovation to suit the needs of a busy family of five. The homeowners approached us to update the entire first floor with a new bathroom and create separate bedrooms for each of their three children.

They wanted a fresh, contemporary aesthetic that would still respect the home’s heritage and charm. Most importantly, the spaces needed to be safe and functional. The original layout featured two bedrooms, one bathroom, and a narrow storage room. To achieve their goals, we adjusted the floor plan to include a third bedroom, custom-built wardrobes, and a shared bathroom for the children.

impactful layout, Thoughtful Design

The new layout involved significant structural work. We began by shifting a wall between one of the bedrooms and the narrow storage room. This change created enough space to form a third bedroom.

As we moved into the bathroom renovation, we addressed a major concern. The original layout included a step-up entry, which had become a tripping hazard. This step existed due to subfloor plumbing. To resolve it, we lowered the bathroom floor and introduced a coffered ceiling over the dining area below which gave us room for the subfloor plumbing.

During construction, asbestos was discovered—a common issue in heritage homes. We safely removed it, ensuring the spaces are completely free from asbestos.

While upgrading the layout, we also preserved the home’s heritage with custom-made doors and architraves to match the originals. We installed custom-made wardrobes in each bedroom, providing generous storage up to the 3.3-metre-high ceilings. The custom cabinetry features v-groove doors in Calcutta profile, finished in classic white, and accented with half-moon oak handles for a warm, tactile finish. Across the rooms, clean lines, soft natural light, and subtle textures define the updated look.

Contemporary Bathroom Design

The renovated bathroom is now step-free, making it safer and more accessible. We replaced the unused bathtub with a walk-in shower and added a tiled nib wall for convenient storage. A frameless fluted glass screen adds texture and visual interest.

To keep the space open and functional, we installed a wall-mounted vanity and paired it with a matching mirrored cabinet. These offer generous storage and include internal power points, keeping surfaces clear and organised. We also added underfloor heating for comfort during colder months. A Clipsal motion-sensor light installed under the vanity provides soft, indirect lighting at night time. It removes the need for harsh overhead lights and ensures safe visibility at night.

The palette feels calm and neutral, with crisp whites and soft limestone tones. We chose Grande Ceppo tiles for the floor and nib, creating a cohesive base. A white matt mosaic feature wall adds subtle detail without overwhelming the space. Brushed brass tapware brings warmth and gentle contrast.

This renovation blends heritage character with everyday function. It reflects the essence of modern Australian design—natural light, organic textures, and relaxed elegance—making the space both beautiful and livable.

Now, the family enjoys a home tailored to their needs. Each child has a stylish, personal bedroom. The parents appreciated the quality of the work and how everything was completed on time.
