CONTEMPORARY ART DECO BATHROOM

WINNER – 2022 KBDi – ALL BATHROOMS SA CATEGORY AWARD

Our clients live in their 1940’s Art Deco solid brick home situated on a large corner block south of Adelaide. 20 years ago they had ambitions of renovating, however raising four children prevented them from taking the leap. As the bathroom fell apart, they turned to Brilliant SA to design and build a much-needed upgrade fit for the family of six.

BATHROOM RENOVATION

Professional couple with adult children living at home shouts a full and busy household! Their former space offered little space and storage, so this bathroom renovation needed to feel spacious and practical. The original layout was small, and our clients wished for a free-standing bath and open shower to fit within the space available. We selected a space-saving back-to-wall bathtub to fit in the original footprint of 6m2, which gave the family an easy cleaning solution as it maximised every bit of space against the corner walls of the room. Its curved corner not only looked appealing but gave the illusion of a free-standing bath and created the space needed for a separate open shower alongside.

Shower storage was a must. Installing a niche unfortunately wasn’t an option as the adjacent walls were single brick, so we built in a nib wall underneath the twin shower rail for soaps and other toiletries. Practical design elements such as the nib wall hides everyday necessities away maintaining a neat and tidy feel. Once an original 1940s pedestal basin offering no storage, our clients can now appreciate their contemporary wall hung vanity and shaving mirror cabinets including internal PowerPoints for convenience.

To make room for the wall niche and provide a sky level window feature, we worked with the original opening but downsized it to a ribbon window. This has maintained natural light to the space and became a contemporary design feature of the bathroom that compliments the niche well. To accentuate the wall niche, LED strip lighting has been added creating ambience for that perfect bathing mood. The final product is a striking, inviting space with practical solutions fit for the whole family.

ART DECO BATHROOM ELEMENTS

Selecting a terrazzo-look tile connects with the existing design features of the home. Appearing on the floor and running up the rear wall, contrasted by crisp white tiles, terrazzo captures the eye and draws you in. Clean chrome details complement the chosen selections, while ribbed timber detail on the vanity adds to the contemporary aesthetic with a nod to yesteryear.

RENOVATION OUTCOME

The newly renovated space gives our clients the ability to utilise their bathroom to its upmost potential. Separate washing stations provide the privacy and accessibility our family urgently needed. This complete change will serve the current six adults, and long after the children move on from the home.
