Contemporary Home Bar & Bathroom Renovation
We transformed the home theatre bar and guest bathroom of this 2000s southern suburbs brick home. The owners felt it was time to refresh these spaces, make them suitable for good films and relaxed entertaining.
The original bar setup, with its curved ceiling and oversized bar table, felt too formal, outdated and bulky. The original bar occupied more space than necessary and lacked storage. They didn’t enjoy standing behind a table serving drinks. After all, they wanted a space that felt relaxed, low-maintenance and easy to use during movie nights.
Across the hall, opposite the home theatre, is the guest bathroom. For this small room with an unusual shape, the owners simply wanted to update so it felt fresh and bright, but also so that it was easy to clean.
Contemporary BAR
Our design team started by creating a contemporary and minimalistic approach with a fully equipped built-in bar that runs from floor to ceiling. We removed the old structures and created a more efficient, streamlined layout that harmonised with the home’s original style.
Bespoke joinery was crafted using black melamine boards in a venette finish, which is fingerprint-resistant and easy to clean. In this case, the bar fridge and wine fridge were built in, so there’s no need to leave the room during movie time. In the bar, we included a sink, cutlery tray, glass racks, and storage for drinks and snacks, so everything is on hand when entertaining. For the splashback, we selected a reeded toughened glass with back-painted metallic detailing, which complements the all black cabinetry, adding subtle texture and depth.
To maintain a clean visual line, the AV system that once cluttered the space has been integrated seamlessly into the cabinetry. This corner discreetly housed all the home theatre cables and connections, keeping them accessible but entirely out of sight.
A cinematic feel with dark tones and understated elegance was part of the brief. The right illumination was key in achieving the moody feel, and we chose dimmed lighting and LED strip lights strategically placed to create the desired ambience.
Compact, Fresh & Functional
Across the hall, opposite the home theatre, is the guest bathroom. Though compact and oddly shaped, we saw the potential to make it feel fresh and inviting. We retained the layout and opted for large-format Quarzite ceramic tiles that run floor to ceiling, instantly making the room feel more spacious.
The petite wall-hung vanity is in a soft grey tone and has a mirrored shaving cabinet with integrated lighting. These additions not only create storage but also introduce a modern, clean look that fits the overall aesthetic of the home.
Everyday Benefits of Renovation
Together, the renovated spaces reflect exactly what our clients were hoping for. The bar is no longer a bulky feature to work around but a sleek and integrated space where entertaining feels easy and enjoyable. It offers everything they need within arm’s reach, all wrapped in a dark and moody design that perfectly suits the cinema experience.
Just across the hall, the guest bathroom feels calm and considered. Though compact, it now feels open and refined. Clever storage and soft lighting make it welcoming for visitors and simple to maintain. Both spaces now align with the couple’s lifestyle and vision, bringing new comfort and purpose to familiar rooms.
