Japanese Garden-Inspired Ensuite Renovation

Our clients reached out to us wanting to renovate their ensuite into an oasis. After five years of living in their Albert Park home, the homeowners knew exactly what they liked in that room and what they didn’t. They envisioned a more considered and personal space with Japanese influences.

The couple felt their old bathroom was generic and bland. They disliked the builder-grade finishes and wanted a design that reflected their own style. Having travelled to Japan many times, a clear vision had already been formed in their minds. Our clients desired a calm and private retreat with a Japanese garden-inspired design. A place where they could fully relax after a long day at work. In addition, they placed emphasis on future comfort, as they were planning for early retirement and wanted this renovation to support their lifestyle for many years.

A Considered Private Retreat

Our design specialist focused on clean lines, as well as strong functionality, so that every element felt intentional. Selecting natural materials to create warmth and a vertical offset layout using green feature tiles to create visual rhythm. In particular, solid timber was used for the vanity and door, adding depth and texture. Subtle, organic curves were incorporated in the wall sconce and basin, which softened the overall look while maintaining structure.

In addition, we thoughtfully integrated practical features throughout the space. Starting with an open walk-in shower with a nib wall which offer convenient shelf for everyday items. In addition, the shaving cabinet with built-in powerpoints provides additional storage. Likewise, the timber vanity with incorporated internal powerpoints allows items to be stored neatly kepping the benchtop clear.

For comfort and versatility, we selected a twin rail shower accommodating both clients’ heights. Furthermore, we selected warm lighting throughout, and a sensor LED strip provided soft illumination at night, while the downlights and wall sconce provide task and decorative lighting.  Lastly, we included a Roca in-wash smart toilet with an in-wall cistern, a major wishlist item inspired by their travels. The result is an ensuite design that reflects a contemporary minimalist approach with Japanese influence, while also emphasising natural materials and retreat-like atmosphere.

Japanese Garden-Inspired Renovation

This design balances contrast and warmth, while maintaining a calm and grounded feel. Brazilian Slate Black wall tiles wrap the walls and create depth, while the painted black ceiling reinforces a cocooning effect. This darker palette reflects the stillness found in Japanese garden spaces, where contrast and shadow create a sense of calm and reflection. In contrast, wood-look floor tiles in vintage wood marrone introduce natural warmth and tactility, and therefore echo the organic qualities of timber and earth seen in Japanese landscapes.

Meanwhile, the Lume Green feature tiles add visual interest, while also strengthening the connection to nature through their texture and variation, reminiscent of moss and layered planting. Together, these finishes create contrast, depth, and a nature-inspired atmosphere. A vessel basin adds sculptural interest and reinforces the simplicity found in Japanese design, while the matte black tapware complements the palette and enhances the cohesive atmosphere. In addition, soft, diffused natural light filters through the window and gently fills the space, and as a result, enhances the calm and immersive mood, much like light moving through a tranquil garden setting.

Vision Brought to Life

Throughout the process, the homeowners felt understood, and as a result, they trusted the journey from design through to construction. This bathroom renovation successfully brought a piece of Japan into their home, while also creating a space that supports their future lifestyle. It supports both daily routines and moments of relaxation, while also reflecting their love of travel and culture. They were so pleased with the outcome that they began considering a renovation of their guest bathroom.

Most importantly, their feedback captured the success of the project, as they shared

“We absolutely love the space you designed and the Brilliant SA team have built for us”.
