Plympton Heritage Kitchen Renovation
This kitchen renovation was completed in a 1940s home in Plympton. The owner had lived in the home for almost three decades and was ready to create a kitchen that truly worked for her.
Cooking had always been her happy place, so she wanted a highly functional space with premium appliances, smart storage and plenty of room to entertain.
The original kitchen was small and inefficient, with a U-shaped layout that closed off the space. Appliances were stacked on limited benchtops, leaving no room for preparation or presentation. Above all, she wanted the renovation to have durable, high-quality materials and expert workmanship throughout.
Space to Entertain
We began by removing the outdated breakfast bar and reworking the kitchen layout to suit the client’s lifestyle. Our team doubled the size of the space and placed a large island bench at its centre. This feature now serves as a multi-purpose zone for food preparation, storage and casual meals. The overhanging stone benchtop comfortably accommodates barstools, encouraging conversation while cooking.
The bespoke joinery makes use of every inch, using the Blum Merivobox drawer system to enhance pantry functionality, and built-in storage keeps surfaces clear. A wall-mounted TV faces the island, so the client can follow her favourite programs while cooking.
The Falcon Classic Deluxe dual fuel range cooker was a must-have for our client. We carefully positioned it for both function and visual impact. With its heritage styling and multi-function oven technology, it brings together traditional character and contemporary performance. We paired it with a matching black extractor hood and coordinated black appliances to ground the space in a bold, consistent palette.
New windows and doors surround the kitchen, framing the room and drawing in natural light. These elements connect the kitchen visually to the rest of the home.
Heritage with Modern Functionality
We used solid timber joinery throughout, stained in a rich reddish-brown to reflect the character of the home. The vertical grain and panelled profiles give the space weight and craftsmanship. We stained window architraves, door frames and skirts to match, reinforcing cohesion across the room.
The benchtops feature Cosentino Sensa granite in Naori. Its dramatic veining in black, white and grey contrasts with the warm timber and delivers a refined finish. The polished surface reflects light and elevates the overall feel of the space.
For the splashback, we chose white subway tiles with a subtle gloss. These bring brightness and texture without overwhelming the design. Above the tile line, soft cream walls soften the scheme and complement the cabinetry.
We laid large-format Brazilian black tiles across the floor. Their muted finish anchors the kitchen and echoes the black in the appliances and granite. This pairing creates visual balance and contrast against the timber cabinetry.
Pendant lights with warm-toned bulbs cast soft light over the work zones. Their simple, heritage-appropriate forms preserve the kitchen’s character.
This renovation transformed a dated kitchen into a refined and functional living space. The client now has ample room to cook, entertain and enjoy everyday moments. The new layout, refined finishes and tailored storage offer comfort and usability without compromising the heritage aesthetic.
The client was thrilled with the result and expressed deep appreciation for the team’s attention to detail. She looks forward to engaging Brilliant SA again for future renovations.
