Scullery & Laundry Home Extension
This busy Flagstaff Hill family has lived in their two-storey home since it was built in the 2000s. With adult children and pets now in the mix, their existing laundry no longer met the demands of daily life.
They needed more bench space and storage. Having worked with the Brilliant SA team over a decade ago on their kitchen, ensuite and bathroom, they returned to us once more—this time to create a purpose-built laundry and scullery extension.
They envisioned a larger, more functional space that would support their lifestyle while incorporating thoughtful zones for both household and pet care.
Purposeful new footprint
We began by designing an extension that would transform an underutilised outdoor area, formerly occupied by a decorative fountain, into a practical 12-square-metre addition. The original 2.4 x 2.4-metre laundry was reconfigured into a functional scullery, while the new structure became a dedicated laundry.
Each zone serves a distinct purpose. We designed a galley-style scullery, positioned beside the kitchen, that includes generous bench space, a secondary sink, open shelving for pantry staples, and some LED strip task lighting beneath the overhead cupboards. Power points were added along the benchtop for appliances, with a corner set aside for the daily coffee routine.
Meanwhile, the adjoining laundry includes tall cabinetry with adjustable shelving and concealed storage for linens, vacuums, and household tools. The washer and dryer sit side-by-side beneath a continuous benchtop, with room for folding on one end and a sink with a hanging rail above on the other. We installed dedicated pet food drawers and a small fridge, completing the space’s highly tailored functionality. Blum Merivobox drawer systems were used throughout, ensuring smooth operation and long-term durability.
Storage, light & lifestyle
To unify both rooms, we built custom melamine cabinetry in Polytec’s Classic White and Boston Oak, combined with matt black handles. White engineered stone benchtops and Futura Flat Bianco tiled splashbacks keep the palette fresh and light. Floating shelves introduce texture and warmth, while black fixtures provide contrast and continuity. The new Rylock aluminium door from the laundry opens directly onto an outdoor clothesline area, allowing for seamless washing and drying.
This thoughtfully designed extension greatly enhances the home’s functionality. As a result, every area now has a clear purpose, and the home supports the family’s lifestyle more effectively than ever. It provides everything the clients were missing in their original laundry; space, efficiency, and smart storage. The scullery helps keep the kitchen clear and uncluttered, while the spacious, light-filled laundry creates a pleasant space to work in. Our clients love how the new areas look and feel, and they are thrilled with the transformation.
