Traditional Ensuite, Wardrobe & Powder Room Renovation

This renovation took place in a serene 1910s home in Waterfall Gully, nestled among century-old olive trees and graceful birch trees. Our clients have lived in the home for over a decade and love its peaceful setting, but the ensuite, wardrobe, and powder room in the 1980s extension no longer served their needs.

The existing ensuite was particularly impractical. A glass atrium ceiling caused extreme temperature fluctuations, offering little insulation from outdoor conditions. A rockery within the atrium consumed valuable floor space, further limiting functionality. The adjoining robe was small and lacked effective storage, while the overall layout failed to make the most of the available area. The powder room located down the hallway was dated and did not match their style.

What the client truly wanted was a private retreat; a calming space where she could unwind, with a seamless connection between the bedroom, robe, and ensuite. At the same time, it was essential that the new spaces respected and complemented the original charm of the home.

Equally important was the renovation experience itself. As a busy family of four, including a child with special needs, clear communication and minimal disruption were critical. Our Designer, Building Supervisor, and the entire Brilliant SA team worked with care and consideration, carefully planning each stage to keep dust and noise to a minimum. Through thoughtful coordination and consistent communication, the process was managed smoothly from start to finish.

Traditional Country Style

Our design solution began by shifting the dividing wall between the robe and ensuite and reclaiming the space previously occupied by the rockery, to accommodate a bathtub. This considered adjustment increased the robe’s capacity by one third without compromising the bathroom’s generous size. The revised layout now flows seamlessly from the bedroom, through the walk-in robe, and into a bright, serene ensuite, balancing privacy with a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.

The ensuite and powder room showcase a thoughtful fusion of English traditional and Australian country style. Sage green accents, VJ panelling, and patterned porcelain floor tiles introduce texture and visual rhythm, while high-end fittings add a refined, classic touch.

To reflect the home’s character while enhancing functionality, we repointed the original atrium limestone wall and transformed it into a striking backdrop for the freestanding bathtub. This feature is softly illuminated by high, insulated windows that frame views of the trees beyond. A walk-in shower, wall hung vanity with a marble-look benchtop, and traditional pendants complete the ensuite. A matching round shaving cabinet and black hardware provide contrast and bring cohesion to the space.

In the compact powder room, the same level of detail carries through. Decorative floor tiles echo those in the ensuite, while a classic round mirror,  chrome tapware, and crisp white VJ panelling create a bright, timeless finish.

Tailored walk-in Robe

The new walk-in robe creates a seamless connection between the bedroom and ensuite, enhancing both flow and functionality. With 3 metre ceilings, the design fully utilises the vertical space while maintaining a sense of visual order and ease. A thoughtful balance of open and closed storage keeps the robe functional and well organised.

Storage has been carefully planned, with clearly defined zones for hanging, open shelving, and deep drawers that support intuitive, everyday use. The overall aesthetic is timeless and transitional, designed to feel welcoming and enduring rather than trend-driven. Crisp white cabinetry is paired with matte black hardware and rails, adding gentle contrast and depth. Set against the softness of the carpeted flooring, the result is a space that feels both modern and inviting.

A Personal Retreat, Thoughtfully Delivered

For the client, this ensuite is more than just a bathroom; it is a personal sanctuary. The renovation allowed them to prioritise key spaces, thoughtfully designed to reflect their style and needs. Improved insulation has made the ensuite noticeably more comfortable throughout the seasons, while the robe finally provides the tailored storage they had long needed.

Our team worked with care and consideration from start to finish, maintaining dust protection, respecting daily routines, and keeping the family informed at every stage. The result is a timeless renovation that blends seamlessly with the original home, delivering renewed comfort and lasting value.
